Since the Minnesota Zoo opened in 1978, volunteers have been at the core of our success. This spring we reach a major milestone: we will achieve 3,000,000 hours of volunteer service to save wildlife! This accomplishment represents the collective service of more than 12,547 volunteers who have donated their time and talent since the Zoo first opened.

We had a great volunteer program when I was first on staff as a zookeeper more than 20 years ago, but since I returned this winter as President, it is clear the program has continued to grow and improve since then. I can’t think of a stronger, more committed volunteer corps in the country today, and am grateful for all they do to create safe, amazing experiences for the 1.2 million guests and students we serve every year. The next time you see a volunteer at the Zoo (they’re most often seen in the iconic blue or green shirts), stop and share your thanks for all they do to make our Zoo great.

If you are interested in learning more about how YOU can become a Minnesota Zoo volunteer, reach out to Sheri Commers-White, the Zoo’s equally dedicated volunteer coordinator at [email protected] or call the Volunteer Office at 952.431.9588. It’s a great experience to be a Zoo volunteer and you are helping us fulfill our mission to save wildlife when you dedicate your time and talent to the Zoo.
