Art for Animals Programs

Let nature be your muse while exploring different art media and animal inspirations, with a local artist and Zoo naturalist as your guides.

Art for Animals*

From painting to papermaking, fiber arts to flower pressing, jewelry to journaling, and storytelling to sun printing… there are endless opportunities to explore the artistic world and the wildlife that inspires it. Projects prioritize sustainability whenever possible. All materials provided unless otherwise specified. No experience necessary; all skill levels welcome.

Muse: Porcupines

Sunday, October 4, 2026 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m.
Art Medium: beadwork
Create a beginner-friendly keychain, earrings, and/or necklace with beads and porcupine quills. Explore porcupine natural history and human connections, meet a porcupine and go behind-the-scenes to see ambassador porcupine living spaces, and add naturally shed quills from Zoo porcupines to your beadwork. Multiple project options with different-sized beads available; all skill levels and abilities welcome.
Materials fee: $5 per participant
Teaching Artist: Alicia De La Cruz | Ojibwe artist enrolled in the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and Owner of Waabooz Beading and Waabooz Cosmetics


Class fee: $60 for members, $65 for non-members, plus materials fee (listed with each program). Includes Zoo admission.
Meeting location: Education Event Center (EEC)
Program maximum: 20 participants
Accessibility: Participants will travel up to .25 total miles on outdoor paths. For mobility or other accessibility questions/concerns, please email [email protected] to chat about the specific program(s) you would like to attend.

*Teacher/Educator Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional development available for participants upon request.
