Photography for Wildlife*

Photography can be a powerful force for wildlife. With the help of a Zoo naturalist and a local photographer, connect photography and conservation while enjoying exclusive access to photograph Zoo animals without the crowds. Each class focuses on a different trail, with trail-specific photography tips and highlights from the animals’ personal and conservation stories.

Engaging Animal Photos on the Northern Trail

Sunday, August 23, 2026 from 5-8 p.m.

Zoo photos often show animals standing in a group or partially hidden by trees or other objects. These photos can be a nice memory of a zoo experience but often lack interest. Using observation, patience, & anticipation; capture the personality of some of the mammals on the Northern Trail. Practice photographer tips & taking time to learn the animals’ behavior for photos that go beyond documentation, look more natural, engage the viewer, & tell a story.

Approximate class schedule:
• 5:00 pm - Welcome & classroom learning
• 5:45 pm - Photography practice on the outdoor Northern Trail
• 7:45 pm - Return to classroom and wrap-up

This class is geared towards people who already have a decent understanding of their camera and how to adjust their camera settings. Bring a camera and any relevant lenses you have; the photographer recommends:
• A camera that allows manual aperture & shutter speed adjustment
• Zoom lens(es) covering a range of at least 100-300mm
• A monopod to help support the weight of the lens (optional).
Participants with simpler cameras are welcome to try some of the tips & otherwise enjoy the animals.

The majority of this program takes place outdoors; the Northern Trail is roughly 1 mile long. If you have mobility or other accessibility questions/concerns, please email [email protected] to discuss the details of the specific program(s) you would like to attend. This program will still take place in light rain, but may cancel if heavy rain or wind, lightning, or storms are imminent.

*Teacher/Educator Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional development available for participants upon request.
