Let nature be your muse while exploring different art media and animal inspirations, with a local artist and Zoo naturalist as your guides.
Art for Animals*
From painting to papermaking, fiber arts to flower pressing, jewelry to journaling, and storytelling to sun printing… there are endless opportunities to explore the artistic world and the wildlife that inspires it. Projects prioritize sustainability whenever possible. All materials provided unless otherwise specified. No experience necessary; all skill levels welcome.
Muse: Ocean Animals
Thursday, June 25, 2026 from 6-9 p.m.
Art Medium: watercolor
Create expressive watercolor animal portraits inspired by marine life at the Zoo! Explore how to capture color, texture, and personality in watercolor while watching and learning about some of the amazing aquatic animals who call the Zoo home. Enjoy Discovery Bay without the crowds and leave with a finished watercolor piece. Beginner and advanced painters welcome; ocean animal stencils available if desired.
Materials fee: $5 per participant

Muse: Bird Feathers
Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Art Medium: cyanotype (sun printing)
Explore how the sun impacts bird colors & behavior… & how it can help make beautiful art! Use cyanotype (sun printing) solution & ultraviolet light to create prints of parrot, penguin, owl, & other bird feathers on paper cards, bookmarks, &/or a cloth pouch. While waiting for the sun to create our prints’ deep blue background, visit & learn about some bird muses who inspired & provided feathers for our art.
Materials fee: $5 per participant + $5 each zipper pouch**
**Limit 2 pouches per person; additional pouches may be available to purchase during the program.
Teaching Artist: Tauby Mintz | Artist & Educator specializing in cyanotype prints; Owner of MintzMakes
*Teacher/Educator Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional development available for participants upon request.
