Art for Animals: Enrichment Lab
Create projects with a purpose—to enrich Zoo animals’ lives!
Art for Animals: Enrichment Lab
Build items to help keep Zoo animals’ brains and bodies healthy and encourage natural behavior. With Zoo staff and experienced Zoo volunteers, go behind-the-scenes at the Zoo’s Exhibit Shop to collaboratively build, sculpt, paint, sand, and otherwise make literal art for animals in an informal, small-group setting. Past projects have included epoxy ‘driftwood’ sticks for penguin nests, PVC ‘log’ treat dispensers, animal hides, and climbs.
Best for people who like to jump right in and learn while doing, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about animal enrichment and the animals these projects are built for. Projects are ongoing and may be started before the program and completed after the program. Dress for mess. Program fee helps cover the cost of project materials.
Sensory note: this program takes place in a relatively small room that may be noisy. Some building materials may have strong odors. You are welcome to bring headphones, mask, or other items for your sensory needs.
