Renewing the Waterfront

Supporting Wetlands, Water Quality, and Your Access to Nature

Wetlands for Wildlife, Access for You

Hard at Work for Wildlife
This project will create more habitat, improve water quality, and expand access to nature for everyone. When completed, it will offer many benefits to the wetland ecosystem and to people, too. Throughout construction, we are working to minimize impact on native wildlife, Zoo animals, and guests. Thank you for your patience with the construction noise and disruptions.

Sustainable and Beautiful
In 2028, the Minnesota Zoo will celebrate 50 years! We’re one of the largest zoos in the country and welcome over 1 million guests every year. By renewing the waterfront and choosing green building practices, we’ll reduce our environmental impact and support people and wildlife for years to come.

This project is made possible by an appropriation from the State of Minnesota. Thank you!

Improving Water Quality and Wildlife Habitat
The shore will be planted with native plants that help filter water runoff. A longer, gently sloped shoreline will slow erosion and runoff during storms. This helps keep the wetland clear and free from pollutants and algae blooms. Wetland plants grow deep, intertwined roots that anchor the soil. This prevents or slows erosion from runoff, rising water, and the seasonal freeze-thaw cycle.

Native plants provide food and shelter for wildlife to thrive. With improved habitat, we expect more pollinators, amphibians, turtles, and birds to move in.

Access to Nature
The Minnesota Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the country! We steward nearly 500 acres and welcome over 1 million guests every year. This project cares for our natural resources and supports our guests with new, accessible pathways in the heart of the Zoo.
This project brings you closer to the wonder of nature in every season. On the path around the shore, enjoy views of the wetlands and wildlife. Gather and relax in new seating areas. Via the ramp and elevator, move easily between the Upper Plaza, Main Building, and the waterfront.
Spending time in nature is important for everyone! The new path and ramp will provide an even surface for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, strollers, and walkers. Find time to take a break, share a meal, and renew with views of the water.

Remodel for Macaques

Japanese macaques have welcomed Minnesota Zoo visitors since 1978. Their habitat has always been a centerpiece of the main entrance to the Zoo. Now, work is underway to refresh and expand their home. The snow monkeys will enjoy a natural habitat inspired by their native Japan, with trees, a pond, and lots of room to play and socialize.

Zookeepers, animal wellbeing experts, and designers planned the new habitat. They know our macaque troop well! The habitat supports macaques’ way of life and meets the highest standards for zoos. While their new habitat is under construction, the troop is living together behind the scenes. The macaques have access to both indoor and large outdoor spaces. By keeping the troop together, their strong social structure remains intact.

FAQs

What animals can I see?

All your favorites—except the snow monkeys! All trails remain open year-round, so you can enjoy the Zoo in every season.

Where are the snow monkeys?

While their habitat is under construction, the Japanese macaques are living together behind the scenes. They have access to both indoor and outdoor areas, ensuring they stay active and social. Keeping the troop together helps maintain their strong social bonds.

Do you have other kinds of monkeys?

Yes! Visit the Tropics Trail to see a variety of primates, including Black and White Colobus Monkeys, De Brazza’s Monkeys, Golden Lion Tamarins, Ring-tailed Lemur, and more! Learn more here: Minnesota Zoo Tropics Trail - Minnesota Zoo

What can I expect during my visit?

Construction is happening in phases and may affect some indoor and outdoor areas. However, you’ll still have access to your favorite trails and nature experiences throughout the Zoo. Signage will be in place to help you navigate any route changes. Construction zones will be visible near the Macaque habitat, Upper Plaza, and Waterfront areas.

Will animals be affected by the construction?

Animal wellbeing is our top priority. Our teams have carefully planned and will continue to monitor the impact of construction activities. During louder phases (such as demolition), noise levels will be monitored. Animal care experts are onsite daily to ensure all animals remain safe, comfortable, and healthy throughout the process.

Are there any resources available for guests during construction?

Yes. While we aim to limit disruption, there may be temporary noise—especially on weekdays. To help you stay comfortable, disposable ear plugs are available at the Guest Services desk. Child-size earmuff hearing protectors are also available (first come, first served, photo ID required for deposit). Learn more: mnzoo.org/accessibility

How long will this Waterfront Renewal and Macaque habitat construction take?

The project will be completed in phases over the next year. When finished, it will create more natural habitat, improve water quality, and expand access to nature for all guests. The snow monkeys will return to a spacious, nature-inspired habitat with trees, a pond, and plenty of room to play and socialize.
