Seafood helps to sustain billions of people across the globe, as both a food source and a source of income. But as the human population continues to grow, we are putting increased pressure on much of the world’s fish and seafood stock. It is currently estimated that over one third of the world’s assessed fisheries are pushed beyond their biological limits and are unsustainable. Choosing to eat sustainably sourced seafood is one of the most significant ways you can help address this threat. The Minnesota Zoo is committed to supporting sustainable seafood and freshwater choices to help protect our environment.
What is sustainable seafood?
Sustainable seafood is defined as seafood that is either wild caught or farm raised that cannot only sustain current populations, but thrive over the long term. The methods by which the seafood is harvested or raised must not cause undue harm to their natural ecosystems. The Minnesota Zoo strongly believes that embracing the use of sustainable seafood is one of the best ways we can all contribute to our oceans’ health.
