Classroom Programs (K-12)

During hands-on, interactive classroom programs, participants explore topics and get an up-close encounter with the animals. Each program is aligned to grade level state standards.

Program Descriptions:

Animal Explorers—Pre-K
Every animal uses senses to explore the world around them. During our animal adventure, children will use their senses to learn more about animals, and the places they call home. They will see some live animals, feel the difference between fur and scales, listen to the sounds animals make, and smell what some of the animals might like to eat. Then the group will work together to compare how different animals use their senses to navigate the world around them. This program is sensory oriented, with time for movement and inquiry. *Please note this program is 30-45 minutes long depending on group needs.

Animal Investigation—Kindergarten
What are some things that all animals need? What does it mean to be a mammal? How many legs does a millipede have? How can snakes move around if they do not have legs? How do I know if something is living? During this program, it’s all about questioning. Observe a variety of different animals, and find out what we can learn just by observing what we can see, hear, and touch.

Critter Classification—Kindergarten
How do we tell if an animal is a mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, or invertebrate? Are there other ways to group animals? Encounter some live animals and think like a scientist while you learn how animals are classified, and what makes each group unique. Use your knowledge to sort animals into groups and figure out where humans might fit in the animal kingdom.

Cycle of Life—1st Grade
While some animals look the same as a baby as they do as an adult, other creatures go through some awesome transformations. No matter what, all living things go through a life cycle. Learn how a tadpole turns into a frog, or how an opossum grows from the size of a jellybean to the size of a cat! Encounter some live animals that show how animals grow up in a variety of ways!

Animal Families—K-2nd Grade
Imagine you are a baby bird, just hatched out of an egg. Did you open your wings, jump out of the nest, and fly away? Did you go out and search for food? Did you survive all on your own, or did you need an adult bird to help you? During this program you will meet a variety of animals that require different things as a baby. Learn more about why some animals need families, while others can survive on their own from birth. We’ll also explore animal family names and clues that tell us if a baby animal requires the help of others.

What’s a Habitat?—2nd-3rd Grade
What do a rainforest, the grasslands, and the tundra all have in common? Students will explore various habitats and learn about the physical characteristics of what makes each one unique.  With animal demonstrations, students will connect how the animal’s adaptations are important to its survival. Together we will discover how each animal is specially designed to survive in their specific habitat.

Wild Survivor—3rd-5th Grade
What would it take to survive in the rainforests of South America? Could you last a day in an African Desert? Animals are naturally equipped to survive in extreme conditions! Whether it’s a tail that doubles as a rope, scale pattern that makes them virtually invisible on the forest floor, or a built-in defense system, there is no question that every part of an animal has a specialized purpose for survival. Explore these awesome adaptations, and compare them to what supplies humans would need to compete with these incredible animals!

Skull Science—6th-12th Grade
Can you tell what an animal eats just by looking at it? What if you could look inside of its mouth? Some jaws are designed to crush, some teeth are made to grind. Investigate several types of animal skulls and meet some live animals to learn more about all of the tools the skull provides and how important those tools are to an animal’s survival.

Mileage Fees

$50.00 mileage fee for program locations between 50 and 100 miles from the Minnesota Zoo.
$100.00 mileage fee for program locations between 101 and 150 miles from the Minnesota Zoo.
$150.00 mileage fee for program locations between 151 and 200 miles from the Minnesota Zoo.
$200.00 mileage fee for program locations over 200 miles from the Minnesota Zoo.

Travel Restrictions:

We offer programming throughout the entire state of Minnesota.

For programs outside of Minnesota, we can travel up to 100 miles from the Minnesota Zoo.

Winter Policy (December – February) – No travel beyond 60 miles.

Please Note:  Additional fees may apply if travel to your location requires an overnight stay.

Cancellation Fees
A $100.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for any programs canceled within 30 days of the scheduled program date.

Reservations are taken on a first-call, first-served basis up to six months in advance. Many dates are filled months ahead, so make your reservations as early as possible to ensure your preferred date.
