Minnesota Zoo Grizzly Bears to Receive Birthday Cakes Inside Their Exhibit During “ABC” Weekend Event
Apple Valley, MINN – January 15, 2010 – It’s all about “Animals, Books, and Children” at the Minnesota Zoo this weekend – and the Zoo’s three brown bears will be celebrating their fourth birthdays by receiving cakes inside their exhibit! In the wild, brown bears are born in secretive dens during the month of January, so it’s impossible to know their exact birthdays. Bears “Haines,” “Sadie,” and “Kenai” came to the Minnesota Zoo as orphans, and though they were raised as "siblings," they came from three very different parts of Alaska. What’s inside a bear birthday cake? The treats will be made with dog food soaked in apple juice, tasty tidbits of apples and carrots, and shredded wheat frosting. While "baking" the cakes, the zookeepers will make sure they oil the pan with salmon oil to have the cakes slide right out. After the bear birthday fun, Minnesota Zoo guests can warm up inside by making their own animal pop-up books, enjoy a story with a special animal appearance, and meet costume character “Corduroy Bear.” ABC Weekend” Activities, January 16–18:
