Calling all horse lovers! Meet the Zoo’s horses! Bring your scout or community group to the Zoo for our new Group Giddyup program! Build horsemanship skills while learning the basics of horse safety and care. Instruction includes leading, mounting, dismounting, and proper horse care such as feeding, grooming, and saddling. Program ends with a staff-led horse ride.

Ages: Children entering grades 1-6 in the fall
Minimum/Maximum: There is a minimum of 6 children to register and a maximum of 12 children.
Adult/Child Ratio: 1 adult chaperone required for every 4 children. If you bring 6-8 children you will need to have 2 chaperones, and if you bring 9-12 children, you will need to have 3 chaperones.  The required chaperones are free of charge.
Fee: $35/child

Times: 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-3:30 p.m.
Patch: Each scout will receive a complimentary horse patch with their program.

Required attire: Long pants (ideally jeans) and closed-toe boots or athletic shoes are required. Low-heeled shoes or boots are recommended. Helmets will be provided. Groups without proper attire will not be allowed to participate and no refunds or transfers will be offered.

Mandatory Waiver: Each child will need to have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. Any child without a signed waiver, will not be allowed in the horse yard.

Group Giddyup Policies (also see FAQs for additional information)
  • This program is offered for children entering grades 1-6 in the fall.  There are no exceptions to this age range due to the size and weight limits of our horses.
  • A ratio of 1 adult for every 4 children is strictly enforced in the horse yard, with a maximum of 12 children and 3 adults.
  • Everyone entering the horse yard (adults and children) must wear closed-toed shoes. No flip flops, sandals or open-toed shoes are allowed in the horse yard. Tip for group leader: bring extra closed-toed shoes in case any of the children forget theirs.
  • All horse rides will be staff-led and all riders (entering grades 1-6) must be wearing jeans (preferred) or long pants. If they don’t have jeans or long pants on, they will not be permitted to ride a horse. Tip for group leader: bring extra jeans in case any of the children forget theirs.
  • Mandatory helmets will be provided.
  • No wheelchairs are permitted in the horse yard. If you have a child with special needs, please contact us at educate@mnzoo.org to discuss possible accommodations.
  • Each child who enters the horse yard, will need to have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. Any child without a signed waiver, will not be allowed in the horse yard.
  • The program will take place rain or shine. Please dress accordingly with proper rain gear.  No umbrellas are allowed in the horse yard. In the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms the program will be held under a covered area instead.  There are no rain checks.
  • Participants must follow all rules as dictated by instructors for safety.
  • No treats can be fed to the horses.

Full payment is due at time of booking.
