Looking for an art project you can do that is also good for the environment? Consider doing some upcycled art! “Upcycling” is the process of turning waste, usually items that can’t be traditionally recycled, into something that is useful or of value. Not only does it enhance creativity and thrift, it’s a great way to reduce the amount of waste in our landfills and lower natural resource use. So what makes for good upcycled art?? The answer is in the eye of the beholder!

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Search around your house for objects you might normally throw away or recycle or donate
  • Make a pile of these objects (bottle tops, bags, jars, clothing, etc.
  • Empty food containers make great flower pots and can be decorated with many materials
  • Old magazines are wonderful for art projects of all kinds
  • Let your creativity flow! See if you can build a tower, “paint a picture”, make a puppet, or re-purpose something into another object

Share pictures of your creation with friends and family! The possibilities are endless!
